A Scavenger Hunt Remix

Featured / Life / August 7, 2014

Last week I discovered a modern scavenger hunt remix after scrabbling to recover from a rained-out 16th birthday party. The scavenger hunt was my wife’s idea. I’ll be honest, I’ve never been a huge fan. Making copies and counting up points has never been my thing. But, once I discovered (and the iPhone app), I completely changed my mind.

Goosechase is absolutely perfect for youth groups, life groups and ministry team nights out.

Here’s how it works:

Goosechase allows the GameMaster to create a custom scavenger hunts from a browser by setting start and stop times, generating unique missions (or choose from existing ones from the goosechase bank) and awarding bonus and penalty points during the game in real time. It’s a scavenger hunt organizer’s dream come true.

For the players, goosechase is a brilliant move forward for scavenger hunts everywhere. After downloading the goosechase app, each team can complete any mission with a snap of the iPhone. And at any time during the game, participants can see a live feed of every team’s pictures and progress as well as view a real-time ranking and score.

Because goosechase does not do video, we included 4 video wildcard challenges worth 1000 points to be shown on the AppleTV when we returned.

Here are a couple downfalls of goosechase:
  • When the GameMaster awards bonuses or penalties, goosechase does not notify the team. I just wish it would.
  • Though the GameMaster can quickly download all of the photos in just seconds, it would be great if goosechase incorporated a slideshow of the final photos.
  • Goosechase is free for 10 teams or less. After that, prepare to pay out the nose. So, be creative about creating your teams. Who’s to say that a team can’t be 50 people? Just make sure everyone on the team shares the same login. (see the pricing chart below)
