A Copernian Moment

Theology / March 4, 2008

We enjoyed center stage until 1543 when Nicolaus Copernicus came on the scene.

Back then, parents taught their children how the universe revolved around us; we where the center. The sun set for us and rose for us; the capricious stars danced in the sky orbiting over our head.

Then Copernicus showed up with a dozen little annoying questions like: “does anybody know what causes the seasons to change?” or “why do some stars appear in the day while others appear only at night?”

It wasn’t long until Copernicus figured it out. Tapping on our collective shoulders he said, “Forgive my proclamation, but we are not central; it is the sun that is the center of the solar system.”

People denied his claims for over 50 years; at least until Galileo came along.

Seeing the world from Copernicus’s vantage point changed everything about how the universe was perceived. The revelation was a ground-breaking.

Copernicus did for the earth, what God does for our souls; “Forgive my proclamation, but you are not the center of the universe, I AM.”

If you been a Christian longer than a day, you probably know this fact…but do you live it? Do your daily decisions and hourly attitudes reflect your belief that God is central to everything or are they Pre-Copernian?

If we could simply base every decision and motivation from the Vantage Point of God’s centrality, wouldn’t life would be better, more effective? Why is it so hard to remember God’s place in our lives. Is it even possible to live a life that recognizes His centrality on a daily basis?
