5 Ways to Regain Emotional Balance

Featured / Life / June 6, 2014

Let’s be honest. Sometimes even the smallest setback can leave you struggling to regain emotional balance. One lonely mishap might trigger skyrocketing anger or plummeting self-worth. All it takes is a boss’s email or a mirror’s reflection and you’re left ungrounded, unraveled and off-balance.

Here are 5 ways for you to regain emotional balance in those moments. The comment box is open, how do you find balance?

1. Own Your Emotions

Sometimes you don’t realize that you need to regain emotional balance until it’s too late. Don’t beat yourself up, that will only make it worse. Take a second and speak what you’re feeling aloud. Are you hurt, sad, afraid, angry? Naming your emotion is the first step in regaining balance.

2. Take a Deep Breath

One of the quickest ways regain emotional balance is by breathing deeply. It’s probably no coincidence that God breathed life into man at the very beginning of time (Genesis 2:7). Breath gave life then and breath gives life now. Several deep breathes will help you regain emotional balance.

3. Ask for Help

Did you see Nik Willenda‘s tightrope walk across the Grand Canyon on June 23, 2013? It was quite possibly the most powerful 30 minutes of television I’ve seen in years. About two minutes into his walk, the cable began to bounce beneath his feet and the wind began to blow. The result, Nik began to get anxious.

It’s kinda hard to relax when you’re 1500 feet above a canyon. -Nik Willenda-

His response? He powerfully asked for God’s help. Prayer is a fantastic way to regain emotional balance. Take it from a guy who lives and dies on his ability to stay balanced. Check out this 6 minute exert from that walk and you’ll see what I mean.

4. Remember Who are Really are!

Be honest, those voices in your head can start saying some pretty nasty stuff about you when you’re off balance. It comes with the territory. There’s a natural relationship between emotional balance and identity.  One great way to regain emotional balance is to remember how God actually sees you. And His opinion is the only one that matters. Here are 24 ways that God sees you…in case you’ve forgotten:

Child of God
Friend of God
Justified
Redeemed
Free
Accepted
Adopted
Sanctified
Victorious
A New Creation
Made in God’s Image
Worth Dying For
Blessed
Favored
Chosen
Blameless
Forgiven
God’s Workmanship
Bought with a Price
Loved
Powerful
Delievered
Healed
Fearless

4. Make a Playlist

It usually takes about 20 minutes for the rational part of your brain to resume control and regain emotional balance. When I’m unbalanced, I usually have forgotten the truth about my identity. That’s why I made a playlist of 4-5 songs designed just for those moments. Whenever I want to regain emotional balance, I’ll throw on my headphones and empathize with the words on my playlist. Below is my current playlist. Go ahead an make your playlist now. Unbalancing moments are coming. Regain Emotional Balance

I still struggle with this, Dave – and this is a real help. Thanks for posting this and I will try and see if I can employ this method. On Wednesday, the stupidest thing got me mad and frustrated and angry and I am still trying to dig out of the hole I made when I exploded.
